LMPD: 2 dead after wrong-way crash on Gene Synder Freeway

LMPD’s Traffic Unit is handling the investigation.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Two people are dead after a car crash involving a wrong-way driver on Gene Synder early Sunday morning.

Around 1:40 a.m., Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) responded to a report of a car collision involving a wrong-way driver on I-265 at mile marker 5.8 which is just past New Cut Road interchange. 

Preliminary investigation and witness statements revealed a man entered I-265 at Dixie Hwy for unknown reasons traveling northbound on a southbound lane before striking another vehicle. 

According to the news release, the woman driving the other vehicle was traveling southbound in the proper lane just past the New Cut. 

Authorities said the head-on collision resulted in serious damages and first responders were called to the scene.

EMS determined that both drivers were dead at the scene in their vehicles. 

Officers said there were no other cars involved. LMPD cannot confirm if the initial wrong-way driver was impaired
