2 men arrested after fight broke out on JCPS bus in St. Matthews

The bus driver called 911 after students on the bus started fighting and smoking weed.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Two men were arrested after a fight broke out on a JCPS bus on Wednesday as students were being dropped off at their homes after school.

Louisville police officers arrested Terrence Bevly Jr., 18, and Nicolas Byrd, 19, as a result of the incident.

At about 5:15 p.m., a fight broke out on a school bus and the bus driver pulled over at a parking lot in the 4900 block of Shelbyville Road in St. Matthews.

According to the arrest citation, the bus driver said children on the bus were not only fighting but also smoking weed and attempting to distract her while she drove, so she called 911.

Kids on the bus called their family members who arrived on scene. The two men who were later arrested were both family members.

The driver said she then tried to drive the bus back to the school, but the children continued to yell and distract her. She drove back to the parking lot of AT&T, where she pulled over before, for the safety of the kids.

Once the bus was parked, Bevly and Byrd reportedly confronted the bus driver and intimidated her, despite their family member already having exited the bus.

A St. Matthew Police officer approached the two men and asked them to leave multiple times, but they refused. The officer tried to physically move them from the location and, according to the arrest citation, Bevly struck the officer's hand and then began to resisted arrest.

While the officer was attempting to place Bevly under arrest, Byrd tried to stop him by pulling Bevly away from the officer. After a struggle, the officer arrested Byrd for interfering with an arrest and performed a "controlled take down" on Bevly to place him under arrest.

Bevly is charged with disorderly conduct (2nd degree), menacing, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer (3rd degree).

Byrd is charged with resisting arrest, disorderly conduct (2nd degree) and obstructing governmental operations.
