BROWNSTOWN, Ind. — Two southern Indiana men were arrested Sunday after a quarter-pound of methamphetamine was found during a traffic stop in Brownstown, according to a Jackson County Sheriff's Department news release.
At about 4:30 p.m., Jackson County Deputy Mitch Ray was driving behind a silver Chevrolet Trailblazer traveling northbound on State Road 135 South near the 700 block South when he discovered the driver of the vehicle had an active warrant out for his arrest.
When Deputy Ray activated his emergency lights and attempted to make a traffic stop, the Trailblazer continued northbound at a slow rate of speed and didn't immediately stop.
As the Trailblazer continued traveling north, Deputy Ray told law enforcement he witnessed a few items were thrown out of the passenger seat. Shortly after this, the vehicle came to a stop near First Street.
Deputy Ray and Brownstown Officer Natalie Boling conducted a felony stop on the vehicle and ordered the driver and passenger out of the vehicle.
The driver was identified as the registered owner Cory M. Cowles, 23, of Seymour, and the passenger was identified as Jose R. Sanchez Ortiz, 36, of Seymour.
A Jackson County K-9 was deployed to sniff the vehicle. The K-9 showed a positive alert to the presence of illegal narcotics. A probable cause search of the vehicle was conducted and a small amount of suspected methamphetamine was located on the passenger floorboard.
Officers responded to the area where Deputy Ray said he saw items being thrown out of the passenger window on State Road 135 South. The K-9 found a large bag containing approximately 118 grams of suspected methamphetamine and a glass pipe, according to the news release.
Both Cowles and Sanchez Ortiz were charged with the following:
- Dealing Methamphetamine - Level 2 Felony
- Possession of Methamphetamine - Level 3 Felony
- Obstruction of Justice - Level 6 Felony
- Resisting Law Enforcement With a Vehicle - Level 6 Felony
- Possession of Paraphernalia - Class C Misdemeanor
Cowles was also charged with a probation violation warrant (level 6 felony) and Sanchez Ortiz was charged with a misdemeanor warrant.
