Attorney for man accused of hitting Kansas family in 2022 requests limited media in trial

Police said Michael Hurley admitted to taking hydrocodone before hitting the Jones family, who were on the sidewalk at 2nd and Market Streets, in July 2022.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The man charged with hitting a Kansas family with his car in downtown Louisville wants to limit media coverage at his upcoming trial.

Police said Michael Hurley admitted to taking hydrocodone before hitting the Jones family, who were on the sidewalk at 2nd and Market Streets, with his vehicle in July 2022.

The father, Trey Jones, died from his injuries two days after the incident. His wife, Amy, and daughter, Ava, were hospitalized for six weeks.

The family was in town for Ava's basketball tournament.

In a motion filed over the weekend, Hurley's attorney noted the case drew national attention.

He argued having photographers, TV cameras and microphones in the courtroom would cause bias and prejudice.

The judge still has to rule on the request.

Hurley's trial is scheduled to start next Monday. He's been charged with murder, assault and operating a vehicle under the influence.
