Body camera footage shows LMPD officer using martial arts on suspect

According to the arrest citation, the officer was patrolling on Bardstown Road when a nearby bouncer approached him about a man with a gun.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Newly released body camera footage shows the moments a Louisville Metro Police officer took down an armed suspect on Bardstown Road.

According to an arrest citation, the officer was patrolling the area near Chill Bar and Akikos Saturday night when a bouncer approached him about a man with a gun.

The bouncer said the man had become belligerent and was being removed.

In the footage, you can hear the officer ask the man "Where's the gun?"

The video then shows the man try to run away, but at some point, the officer's body camera gets knocked off. A witness then saw the body camera laying on the ground, picks it up, and points it toward the fight that's now in the middle of the road.

LMPD said the officer used jiu-jitsu to subdue the man until other officers could arrive.

According to the arrest documents, officers found a gun in the suspect's front waistband.

Police arrested him on charges that include wanton endangerment.

In light of recent shootings and other events, city leaders, LMPD and Alcoholic Beverage Control (Metro ABC) have launched new safety measures.

They include installing surveillance cameras in the Jefferson County Traditional Middle School parking lot and increasing patrols for nuisance offenses like open-container violations.

They have asked neighbors to report any suspicious activity by calling 574-3591 and choosing option four.
