LOUISVILLE (WHAS11) -- Murder victims, 14-year-old Larry Ordway and 16-year-old Maurice Gordon Jr., were laid to rest Tuesday afternoon. The funeral happened just hours after the man accused of killing them appeared in court.

Emotions were running high at Ratterman's Funeral Home where the two young lives were celebrated.

Their ashes sat side by side inside the church, while a preacher promised everything is part of God's plan.

"From when they was babies, growing up, and then they can't even live their life, no more. And it's just sad," a friend of the boys said of the pictures that were on display.

For some the somber scene was a chance for closure. But for others, that closure has yet to happen.

"The closure is when that dude gets behind bars and he gets what he done to them, that's when we get closure,” another friend of the boys said.

Tensions were high not only in at the funeral but also in court. Brice Rhodes, the man police said murdered the two boys, threatened his former attorney Brendan McLeod after learning Mcleod was dropping the case because of conflict.

McLeod said Rhodes spit on him in the hallway before entering the court room.

Knowing what had happened, McLeod said the judge kept the two apart. But the few feet of distance was not enough.

The two men then got into a verbal altercation.

"Nice, cheap shot," McLeod said to Rhodes, of him spitting him.

"You're a coward," Rhodes responded.

"Nice, cheap shot," McLeod said again.

Rhodes responded, "You’re a coward, and I’m going to see you when I get out."

Rhodes now has until June 3 to get a new attorney. He denied his right to a public defender.
