One year after murder, mother celebrates what should have been son's graduation

Decorian Curry's murder remains unsolved but it didn't stop his mother from marking the day what should have been his graduation day.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Monday marked one year since the murder of 17 year-old Decorian Curry.

The teenager should’ve been graduating from Western High School this month so his mother to turn his resting place into a commemoration.

“I just wish he was here to enjoy the celebration because that's all he wanted to do, was walk across the stage,” his mother, Laurice Henry explained.

Beside his tombstone, decorations for the 2020 graduate. Henry was surrounded by loved ones, and some of Curry’s classmates, as the group stood in the rain to release balloons into the sky.

“If I could give him my heart and bring him back and take me, that's what I would do,” his mother explained.

Curry was known to most as ‘Yuddy.’ This time last year, he was outside enjoying a porch party near 42nd and Larkwood when a car turned the corner, and someone inside started shooting. Yuddy was hit and died at the hospital.

“Justice is coming real soon. It's coming sooner than I think,” she said.

Laurice doesn't believe Yuddy was the target, but said she was told by police that they believe it was a white vehicle involved.

“I just keep praying about the situation.”

Twelve months later, his murder remains unsolved, but Laurice is confident in the detectives working the case.

“He told me that COVID-19 is not going to stop him from doing his job on my son's case,” she explained.

On this day, she tried to take a break from the grief, and instead held onto a moment celebrating her graduate.
