LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Four people were shot and one was killed Wednesday afternoon in Louisville's Russell neighborhood.
Louisville Metro police responded to the area of 12th Street and West Muhammad Ali Boulevard Wednesday afternoon. The call was received at 12:38 p.m.
According to LMPD, all four victims are males. Corey Dillard, 22, was pronounced dead at the scene and the other three were taken to the hospital in critical condition.
All victims were inside a vehicle, according to police.
No one has been arrested. Police do not believe there is any danger to the public.
A Jefferson County Public Schools spokeswoman said increased security was present at a nearby school building due to the incident, but no lockdown order was given. All students and staff are safe.
Multiple blocks in Louisville's Russell neighborhood were surrounded by crime tape.
Neighbors near the intersection said the gunfire could be heard everywhere.
"It was like 4th of July and New Year's Eve," Eddie Woods with No More Red Dots said.
Community activist Khalid Raheem said the violence is getting out of hand.
"A lot of stuff used to happen at night, in the dark, undercover, but now things are getting so common that things are unfolding before our eyes," he said.
Raheem has been to several homicides over the last few months, and he feels the violence is "the product of lack of communication and interpersonal communication."
"We have individuals in this city that feel comfortable going around and taking someone's life in broad daylight and that's 100% unacceptable," LMPD Deputy Chief Steve Healey said.
LMPD spokesperson Dwight Mitchell added that because this happened during the day they "strongly believe that someone saw something."
