LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A church bishop in Louisville is accused of setting his own church on fire almost three years ago.
A grand jury indicted Johnathan Mullins on an arson charge for the fire on March 13, 2021.
It happened at the Greater New Hope Community Church on East Jacob Street. The historic building was also the first synagogue in Kentucky.
It took more than 70 firefighters two hours to contain the blaze, but several crews stayed on scene until the next morning.
One firefighter was hurt at the time, and the building suffered severe structural damage.
Prosecutors said evidence uncovered in the investigation led to the charges.
If convicted, Mullins could face 20 to 50 years or life in prison.
He is scheduled to be arraigned on March 18.
