LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A student was charged Thursday after a gun, knife and marijuana were found at a Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) middle school.
Highland Middle School staff searched the student's locker and found the knife and a small amount of marijuana, according to a letter sent home to parents obtained by WHAS11.
As security staff were questioning the student, a gun fell down their pant leg and onto the hallway floor. The weapon was secured immediately and school officials called Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) and JCPS Police.
Highland Middle School's security level was briefly raised following the incident and JCPS Police's canine unit swept the building.
The canine unit did not discover any other weapons. Officials lowered the school's security level and resumed normal school operations.
According to Highland Middle School officials, the gun was never displayed in a threatening manner and the student is facing charges from JCPS Police and will be disciplined.
"While this was an unwelcomed incident, I can assure you that Highland is a safe, welcoming school," Highland Principal Vanessa Green said in a letter to parents.
Carolyn Callahan, JCPS spokesperson, said the middle school does not have a weapon detection systems yet. She said they will get them next school year with the rest of their middle schools.
