Man in 'critical condition' after being shot by Louisville police

Louisville police are asking the public to avoid the area of 26th and Garland Avenue due to an ongoing investigation.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A man is in critical condition after he was shot by Louisville police in the Parkland neighborhood Tuesday morning.

Louisville Metro Police responded to a Shotspotter call at a home in the 2500 block of Garland Avenue around 3:30 a.m.

Officers on scene said they could hear shots fired and the run was updated to a break-in.

LMPD Police Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel said officers saw a man coming out of the window of a house with a handgun.

The man then led officers on a foot chase. He reportedly refused to drop the gun after police ordered him to.

Officers shot at the man, striking him several times, then rendered aid and rushed him to UofL Hospital.

According to officials, the man is in critical condition. No other injuries were reported.

Chief Gwinn-Villaroel said bodycam footage from this incident will be released in two business days.

Police said there is no further danger to the community and no other suspects have been identified at this time.

LMPD's SWAT team has left the scene, however 26th Street remains closed from Maple to Kentucky Street as detectives continue their investigation.
