Indiana State Police seize estimated $1.1 million drug shipment following traffic stop

The purpose of the traffic stop was for the officer to conduct a routine DOT compliance inspection, when they found the stash.

PUTNAM COUNTY, Indiana — Indiana State Police say a traffic stop on Tuesday led to the discovery of over $1 million worth of illegal drugs.

According to a release from ISP, around 2 p.m. on March 19, a trooper pulled over a semi truck on I-70 near mile marker 41, which is near the exit to State Road 231 in Cloverdale.

The purpose of the traffic stop was for the officer to conduct a routine DOT compliance inspection. However, the trooper allegedly noticed "criminal indicators" during a conversation with the driver.

ISP says the driver of the truck agreed to allow police to search the truck. During the search, officers say they found 70 pounds of cocaine, 45 pounds of marijuana and $47,735 in cash inside the trailer.

The driver was taken into custody and transported to the Putnam County Jail on preliminary charges of dealing narcotics and dealing marijuana, both felony counts.

ISP says the truck was traveling to Indianapolis from Los Angeles. Police valued the marijuana at $100,000, while the cocaine was estimated to have a street value of $1 million.

Putnam County is approximately 45 miles southwest of downtown Indianapolis.
