LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A former Indiana sheriff facing 15 felony charges will keep his position as the Clark County GOP chairman for now.
Former Clark County Sheriff Jamey Noel is accused of paying jail employees to run his personal errands and work on his property while on the clock and being paid with county funds. He faces numerous charges, including corrupt business practices, ghost employment, official misconduct, theft and tax evasion.
Documents show investigators are also looking into other matters, including Noel's vast car collection of more than 130 vehicles, and whether he unlawfully purchased an airplane.
Noel is also the Clark County GOP chair. Indiana GOP spokesman Griffin Reid told WHAS11 Friday there are no plans to remove Noel from his position.
"We understand that this is an ongoing investigation," Reid said in a statement. "Those named are innocent until proven guilty. We are in communication with local grassroots leadership."
Reid refused to answer if Noel's job is a paid position or if Noel has attended any GOP meetings since his arrest.
This week, a special prosecutor said in court that the state is prepared to bring charges against Noel's wife, Misty Noel. It's unclear what those charges could be or when she could be arrested.
Investigators are also scrutinizing Noel's automobile collection, which includes 133 vehicles registered to the Utica Township Volunteer Fire Department and New Chapel EMS Association, which he runs. Several were "inconsistent" with a non-profit fire department and EMS business.
Earlier this month, it was revealed Noel fathered a child with a former county councilwoman Brittney Ferree. Documents say he made several child support payments with funds from the association's funds.
