Southern Indiana man sentenced for actions during Jan. 6 insurrection

Curtis Tate, 32, was sentenced to 63 months in prison with 36 months of supervised release, and ordered to pay $3,176.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A southern Indiana will spend more than five years in jail after pleading guilty to assaulting police officers during the riots at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Curtis Tate, 32, was sentenced to 63 months in prison with 36 months of supervised release, and ordered to pay $3,176 in restitution for his actions.

According to court documents, he arrived at the restricted grounds surrounding the Capitol building just after 2 p.m. As he made his way to the front of his group, he hit a Metropolitan Police (MPD) officer in the hand. Another officer sprayed Tate with pepper spray.

The documents said Tate posted several videos to his social media displaying the metal baton he used to hit the officer documents showed. One of the videos showed him at the Tunnel entrance of the Capitol building with the caption “F— ALL THESE GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS" charging at a line of officers with it.

Court documents show Tate hit a United States Capitol Police (USCP) officer in the helmet with the baton, and got pepper sprayed again.

He also threw a black speaker box at a window that already had a crack in it, and another speaker box at MPD officers at the Tunnel, according to documents. He also threw one of his shoes at them.

Tate then helped move items through the crowd that ended up being used against other officers in the Tunnel documents showed.

The FBI arrested him in August 2023 in Wilmington, North Carolina officials said.
