Jeffersonville Police arrest man accused of threatening officers

Authorities said Derek Avery called Clark County 911 on Monday to request a police response and file a complaint.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Jeffersonville Police (JPD) arrested a man and his girlfriend after a confrontation outside their department on Monday.

Authorities said Derek Avery called Clark County 911 to request a police response and file a complaint around 12:35 p.m.

He reportedly told them he would be armed with both a rifle and a handgun.

The JPD on-duty supervisor that day tried to de-escalate the situation after learning about a domestic disturbance call from Aug. 9 that involved Avery investigators said.

Law enforcement then tried to talk to Avery; police said he then made direct threats to officers, and specifically named one that responded to the call on Aug. 9.

Investigators said he also threatened Indiana State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which prompted responses from the FBI Threat Assessment Center and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).

Detectives surveying his apartment complex saw Avery and his girlfriend, Megan Adams, in the apartment parking lot; investigators said if JPD did not respond to the apartment, Avery told them "he would then go to the Jeffersonville Police Department."

At around 3:15 p.m., Avery got into a vehicle while heavily armed and wearing a ballistic vest according to authorities.

Police said after the detectives at the complex warned them, they then moved staff away from the front of the building, deployed law enforcement around the area, and blocked traffic within the 2200 block of East 10th Street.

When Avery stopped in the department building parking lot, the K9 unit, SWAT and support officers confronted him JPD said. After several minutes, police took him into custody without incident.

Officers said they found two handguns and an AR-15 style rifle in his possession.

Police also got a warrant for Avery's and his girlfriend's apartment; while on their way there, authorities said they intercepted Adams, who also had guns and ammo in her possession.

Avery is charged with Intimidation and Intimidation with a Deadly Weapon, and Adams is charged with narcotics-related charges.

Avery is scheduled to be in court on Aug. 15.
