LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The man accused of shooting two Louisville police officers in Smoketown made his first court appearance days after the incident.
According to Louisville Metro Police (LMPD), 19-year-old Jeremiah Thompson fired a gun as two officers held him on the ground during an arrest Tuesday night.
The officers were responding to a report of a stolen car, which they say Thompson admitted to driving.
Both officers have been released from the hospital, with LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey saying Wednesday they are in "good spirits" and humbled by the support they've received. Thompson was also shot in the torso when the gun went off.
During his arraignment Thursday morning, Thompson's attorney requested the judge lower his $100,000 bond to $5,000.
The attorney also claimed to be in possession of video that allegedly shows the officers failing to follow proper safety protocols during Thompson's arrest.
"His left arm was above his shoulder and visible," Thompson's attorney argued. "Police could have grabbed that arm, but instead chose to reach underneath him, and when they couldn't, one of the officers pulled out an extendable [police baton] and jammed it into his side. That's when you hear a pop."
The judge ultimately denied the attorney's request to lower Thompson's bond.
Thompson will be back in court on Tuesday, Dec. 3.
Humphrey said the officers' body-worn cameras will be released at LMPD's next bi-weekly press conference on Dec. 4.
