1 dead, 1 in critical condition after police respond to domestic situation in Portland neighborhood, LMPD says

Chief Jackie Gwinn-Villaroel said this appeared to be a domestic situation where one family member pulled a gun on other members of the family.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — One person is dead and one person is in critical condition after Louisville police responded to a domestic situation in the Portland neighborhood Thursday night.

Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) said First Division officers were dispatched to a home in the 400 block of North 25th Street around 8:45 p.m. The 911 operator told dispatchers they believed the suspect was on drugs, and when officers arrived they reported hearing loud arguing coming from a room upstairs.

In a news conference, Chief Jackie Gwinn-Villaroel said this appeared to be a domestic situation where one family member pulled a gun on other members of the family. There was a child home at the time of the incident.

Gwinn-Villaroel said officers tried to talk with the people in the room. However, when the situation escalated, those officers forced their way in and shots were fired.

"The officers immediately rendered life-saving aid to the individuals. One individual died at the scene. Medics transported the other to University of Louisville Hospital, where he is in critical condition," the chief said.

LMPD said two officers fired their weapons, Officer Shaine Edmondson and Officer Jeffrey Goldman. Both men have been officers with LMPD since April 2, 2023.

At this time, it's unknown if it was an LMPD officer who fired the fatal shot.

Gwinn-Villaroel noted that officers found guns in a room upstairs.

There is body-worn camera footage of this incident. That video is set to be released within the next 10 business days, per LMPD's new policy.
