Coroner identifies two men killed in Baxter Avenue shooting over the weekend

A 20-year-old and 29-year-old were both shot and killed in the Highlands early Sunday morning.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville Metro Police Department responded to a shooting early Sunday morning in the Highlands that left two men dead and another man injured.

Around 1:45 a.m., police responded to a shooting in the 900 block of Baxter Avenue.

Police confirmed a man was “down” with gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. A second man was found in the same area but was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office later identified the victims as 20-year-old Michael Bachelor, Jr. and 29-year-old Montay Wade.

A third man arrived at the hospital by private means with gunshot wounds and is expected to live, according to officials.

Police say there are no suspects at the time.

"People want to be around fun, lively bars with live music," Paul Eldridge, a Highlands resident, said. "They don't want to be shot at the end of the night."

AUG. 11, 2024; LMPD ropes off a section of the 900 block of Baxter Avenue following a deadly shooting.

"We cannot continue to tolerate a culture of violence," Metro Councilman Ben Reno-Weber said.

Reno-Weber represents District 8 and it covers much of the Highlands..

"I think anytime you get alcohol and a concentration of violence together, that's just bad," he said.

Reno-Weber said there is increased patrol in the Highlands and it will continue throughout the rest of the summer.

"This is still one of the safest neighborhoods in our entire city and every incident like this reminds us that it is one incident too many," Reno-Weber added.

Residents tout the unique entertainment area, but call for change to feel safer.

"No one who moves into this neighborhood doesn't expect there to be live music," Eldridge said. "They do expect there not to be 30 shots that rang off at the end of the night."

LMPD’s Homicide Unit has responded and is heading an investigation into this incident.
