LMPD impounds several cars for street racing around Louisville

Some of the vehicles recently seized include a Dodge Charger, Durango, and Ford Mustang.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville Metro Police Department posted Saturday on social media that officers impounded several vehicles involved in street racing.

LMPD officials say some of the vehicles recently confiscated include a Dodge Charge, Durango, and Ford Mustang.

According to LMPD's Facebook post, the red Charger was traveling at 140 mph when the speed limit was 55 mph.

The Durango and the Mustang were seen racing on West Broadway by police. Unbeknownst to the drivers, LMPD says there were two unmarked vehicles behind them.

Due to a street racing ordinance passed by Louisville Metro Council in 2022, the vehicles will sit in the tow lot for the next six months and each racing offender will have to pay a $1,000 fine.

LMPD officials say the ordinance gives the department "teeth" to combat street racing.

"We've recovered stolen cars, guns and drugs searching for this activity. Moreover, people have been KILLED in Louisville directly related to street racing and the community is fed up with it," LMPD said in a Facebook post.

LMPD urges the public to call the tip line at (502) 574-LMPD if you see street racing.
