Pastor calls for people to 'put the guns down' after deadly shooting in California neighborhood

"I believe the city is really getting tired of scenes like this," Pastor Broderick Smith said.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A deadly shooting in the California neighborhood left neighbors searching for answers Tuesday night.

Louisville Metro Police said officers responded to the 1500 block of Prentice Street around 5:20 p.m., near California Park, on reports of a person down in a vehicle. When they arrived, police said officers found a man who had been shot. While they did perform life-saving aid, the man later died at the scene.

On Thursday, the Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 47-year-old Roderick McKisick.

Pastor Broderick Smith's church is blocks away from where the incident happened. Since moving to the area in 2021, he said he hasn't seen much crime.

"A couple of car break ins, but other than that, it's a quiet neighborhood," Smith said. "We want to make sure this isn't recurring offense."

Now, the department's Homicide Unit is overseeing the investigation.

"I believe the city is really getting tired of scenes like this," Smith said.

According to LMPD's Gun Violence Dashboard, LMPD has investigated 149 homicides this year. Smith hopes to see that number drop in 2024. In the meantime, he has a message for the community.

"It's time to put the guns down," he said. "If you don't know what you're doing, put it down. Talk it out."

Anyone with information is asked to call LMPD's anonymous tip line at (502) 574-LMPD (5673) or use their online portal.
