LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A man was shot and killed by Louisville Metro police Thursday night.
LMPD officers asked the public avoid a part of southwest Jefferson County late Thursday night as they were on the scene of a "critical" investigation.
In a late night update to the media, interim Chief Paul Humphrey said according to their preliminary investigation, officers were called to the 6600 block of Eagle Wood Drive around 9:30 p.m. for “unknown active trouble.”
When officers arrived, he said they found an agitated man inside a house with other family members.
Humphrey said the family members were able to exit the home safely and officers tried to de-escalate the situation.
During the conversation, the chief said the man armed himself with a knife and officers gave him verbal commands to drop it.
Humphrey said the man exited the home during the interaction with the knife still in his hands and started advancing towards officers.
He said multiple officers deployed less lethal rounds and tasers, while others discharged their firearms. Officers rendered aid, but the man died at the scene.
Humphrey said they plan to release the body camera footage within 10 business days.
“This is obviously a tragedy, and we want to recognize the loss of life,” the chief said. “This is a distressing moment for both the officers as well as the family. However, we are grateful no one else was injured in this incident.”
Anyone with information is asked to call LMPD’s anonymous tip line at (502) 574-LMPD (5673). The Public Integrity Unit is investigating this incident.
