Police: Suspect steals vehicle in downtown Louisville with child in backseat

Police found the vehicle abandoned a short time later with the child unharmed.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A terrifying situation unfolded for a Louisville father early Tuesday morning in downtown Louisville.

Louisville Metro Police (LMPD) said the man pulled into the Shell gas station at First and Jefferson Streets just before 7 a.m.

The victim left his pre-school-aged son in the backseat, with the car still running, while he went into the store briefly, police said. When he left the store, he saw a suspect get into his red Volkswagen and drive away with his son still inside.

LMPD officers were quickly able to recover the vehicle moments later near the intersection of Roy Wilkins Avenue and Chestnut Street.

Authorities said the vehicle had been abandoned, but the man's child was still in the backseat, unharmed.

No arrests have been made at this time, however LMPD's First Division is investigating the incident.
