Suspect charged in Louisville homicide arrested in Florida after police chase in victim's car

Liobys Caro-Mena was taken into custody in Miami, Florida after leading police on a chase in the victim's stolen car.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A "person of interest" in a Louisville homicide has been served a fugitive warrant for murder after being arrested more than 1,000 miles away.

Louisville Metro Police (LMPD) said Alain Perez, 45, was found dead in a residence in the 800 block of Inverness Avenue on Sunday. Police noted that Perez's vehicle was also missing. The car was discovered on Monday in Miami, Florida after a police chase ended in a crash, according to WPLG, an ABC affiliate in Florida.

According to police, Liobys Caro-Mena was behind the wheel of the victim's stolen car.

Caro-Mena struck six other vehicles during the pursuit. The chase ended when he lost control of the vehicle and flipped over.

"He was trapped inside, fire rescue was able to extricate him out [and] airlift him to Ryder Trauma Center where he is listed in stable condition,” Detective Alvaro Zabaleta, a police spokesperson in Miami, said.

LMPD said along with his murder charge in Kentucky, Caro-Mena is being held in Miami on multiple charges of grand theft of a vehicle, fleeing, leaving the scene of a crash and reckless driving.

Florida authorities said Caro-Mena is set to be extradited back to Louisville once released from the hospital.
