Louisville man pleads guilty to carjacking resulting in death of teenager

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Louisville man pleaded guilty this week to a carjacking which resulted in the death of a teenage driver three years ago.

On March 1, 2021, Michael Dewitt committed a carjacking at gunpoint during which he stole a 2011 Ford F350 from its owner in Simpsonville, Ky., according to court documents.

As he was fleeing the scene in the stolen truck, Dewitt collided with a vehicle on Dixie Highway in Louisville, causing the death of a 17-year-old.

Dewitt's sentencing hearing is scheduled for January 27, 2025. The maximum penalty for carjacking resulting in death is life in prison.

According to the U.S. Attorneys Office, if the plea agreement in the case is accepted by the court, Dewitt will be sentenced to 29 years and four months in prison.
