LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Louisville man accused of a shooting in St. Matthews that happened on Friday appeared in court on Monday.
Arik Brooks, 27, is accused of shooting and injuring a woman, and then waving a rifle around on Frankfort Avenue.
His lawyer argued for his bond to remain at $200,000.
"The concerns that the court has to consider statutorily is just a 10%, leave it where it is, and quite candidly I'm not sure if that's going to get him out of here anyway," his lawyer said.
Brooks is facing charges for attempted murder, wanton endangerment, robbery and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
St. Matthews Police said on Friday afternoon, Brooks and a woman drove to parking lot near Books A Million in St. Matthews. They believe Brooks and the woman had been in a romantic relationship at one point.
Authorities said he shot the woman in the arm after arguing with her.
St. Matthews Police Chief Barry Wilkerson said, "they were friends; at this point she was meeting up with a family member at that location." Police said they are not sure what caused the confrontation.
Wilkerson then said Brooks drove 10 minutes away to Frankfort Avenue in a different stolen vehicle. Police said he left it at the railroad tracks.
Surveillance video showed Brooks outside Patrick's Neighborhood Bar on Frankfort Avenue holding an assault rifle. It also showed him walking down the middle of Frankfort Avenue with the weapon as cars drove by.
Amy Lambert was working next door at the Frankfort Avenue Beer Depot and Smokehouse when Brooks came up.
"All I heard was one of the regulars yell and say, I heard him say 'gun,' and then he yelled my name he said 'Amy call 911'," she said.
The video showed Brooks eventually makes his way toward FABD Smokehouse. Lambert immediately put her staff and patrons in a safe place.
"I don't really know what he was saying, but he kept saying the same statement over and over," she said.
Lambert said Keith Ransdell, the manager at Patrick's Neighborhood Bar, started directing traffic towards McCready Avenue until police came.
"It was a very scary situation," said Lambert.
According to police, he admitted to shooting the woman inside her car.
The judge kept his bond at $200,000.
Brooks next court date is set for May 29.
