Louisville teenager arrested, charged in connection to Labor Day street takeover event

Bryce Johnson was doing donuts and drifting in the middle of an intersection while a passenger was hanging out of the window, according to his arrest citation.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Louisville teenager was arrested Wednesday by LMPD and is accused of participating in a street takeover event that occurred in multiple locations over Labor Day Weekend.

Bryce Johnson, 18, is charged with riot (second degree), wanton endangerment (first degree), racing a motor vehicle on a public highway, reckless driving, disorderly conduct (second degree) and obstructing a highway.

According to his arrest citation, Johnson participated in multiple street takeovers throughout the city on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1.

The first takeover event was at 26th and Market streets. During the takeover, Johnson was caught by security cameras drifting and doing donuts in the middle of the intersection while a passenger was hanging out of the window.

When officers arrived, Johnson fled the scene in his vehicle, a white Dodge Charger.

Shortly after the first takeover was broken up, officers responded to a second street takeover at the intersection of New Cut Road and West Kenwood Avenue. When officers approached Johnson's vehicle, he reportedly stopped in traffic and did a burnout while a passenger was hanging out of the window.

According to police, this incited others to become more involved, even motivating some individuals to jump on a police car. Multiple officers then responded to the scene and dispersed the crowd.

Soon after the second takeover event, LMPD officers were dispatched to the area of 2nd Street and River Road, where an apparent takeover turned into a shooting.

Prior to the shooting, Johnson's vehicle was seen by security cameras blocking the roadway while others were drifting and doing burnouts in the intersection.

Once the shooting happened, the arrest citation says everyone fled the area. However, investigators were able to track Johnson down using Flock cameras to identify his vehicle.

During a police interview after his arrest on Wednesday, Johnson admitted to police he was the driver of the Dodge Charger and that he did participate in the street takeover events over Labor Day Weekend, according to his arrest citation.

Johnson is set to appear in court Monday, Sept. 16 at 9 a.m.

He has seven other active cases out of several counties where he is facing similar charges.
