Man arrested after sanitation workers find girlfriend's body in garbage truck

Police have arrested a man after they say he found his girlfriend unresponsive, throwing her body away in the trash which was later discovered by sanitation workers.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Police have made an arrest nearly 24 hours after a woman’s body was found in a garbage receptacle in Taylor-Berry neighborhood.

Officials with Metro Police say the Homicide Unit arrested 59-year-old George Edward Stokes and charged him with tampering with physical evidence and abuse of a corpse.

The woman’s body was found in the trash receptacle in the rear of the 2700 block of 7th Street Road near 7th Street Road and Phyllis Avenue Friday afternoon.

Metro Public Works employees say when they were emptying one of the receptacles into the truck, the body of the woman was found lying in the truck.

Police say the woman was the girlfriend of Stokes but did not immediately identify her.

He told police that he found the woman unresponsive inside his apartment and then placed her into the garbage receptacle.

Police said Stokes then moved the garbage receptacle to the curb for weekly pickup.

It’s unclear how the woman died but police say their investigation is ongoing.

Stokes is currently being held at Metro Corrections and is expected to be arraigned July 30.
