LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Authorities say a shooting outside of a Frankfort Avenue business left one person dead on Sunday.
Metro Police officers said officers were dispatched to the Fox Den around 3 a.m. in the business’ back parking lot.
WHAS11 spoke to Jared Matthews, owner of the business, and he explained the man that was shot had been involved in a domestic dispute inside the bar before security kicked him out.
Matthews also said the man was being aggressive and stated he was going to “kill everyone inside the bar” before grabbing a pistol from his car.
“The guy approached with his pistol – he went to grab it and our security and defense had to shoot him,” he said.
The Jefferson County Coroner later identified the man as 30-year-old Christopher Mayes. Mayes was pronounced dead at the scene.
Attempting to dispel any fears the bar is unsafe, Matthews said "this is not what this place is about."
"It's an unfortunate world we're living in now, that anyone would even think to raise a gun and threaten someone's life," he said. "It honestly just breaks my heart for anyone who witnessed that. And it just breaks my heart as a country--as humanity--that would even happen. That's not what that place is supposed to be."
Matthews said there had never been a shooting near, let alone at his establishment before this incident.
"Honestly is the worst thing that could happen," he said.
LMPD’s Homicide Unit is handling the investigation. An LMPD spokesperson said, at this time, all parties have been accounted for in this incident.
