LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A man is facing 14 years in prison after he was convicted of shooting a man in 2021 who was left paralyzed.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Gerina D. Whethers announced Monday that Doshawn D. Calhoun was found guilty by a Jefferson County jury on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2024, for assault in the first degree.
The jury recommended a total of 14 years in prison for the charges on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2024.
“The jury’s recommendation of this penalty is in full line with the seriousness of the defendant’s actions,” Whethers said. “The senseless shootings we continue to experience have a significant impact on the families in our community, and we will continue to aggressively prosecute gun crimes with the full weight they deserve.”
The jury found Calhoun guilty after hearing witness testimony and evidence regarding the 2021 shooting incident.
Calhoun is accused of shooting Jim Lattner in the back, causing serious physical injury, according to the The Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney.
Lattner was paralyzed from the waist down and he died a year later.
He and Calhoun were involved in an argument prior to the shooting. Lattner knew Calhoun and provided his name to officers and also identified him through a photo.
The case has been scheduled for a formal sentencing hearing on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2024, in Circuit Court Division 5.
