Man sentenced to 15 years in prison for deadly DUI crash on Lexington Road

In June 2023, Bell was driving with five other people in a car down Lexington Road toward Grinstead Drive. Bell hit a median, lost control and crashed the SUV.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A year after a fatal crash killed a 21-year-old Louisville man, the driver was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

The sentence came after Daniel Bell pled guilty earlier this year to manslaughter, assault and wanton endangerment counts in connection to the crash.

In June 2023, Bell was driving with five other people in a car down Lexington Road toward Grinstead Drive. Bell hit a median, lost control and crashed the SUV.

As a result of the crash, one passenger, Javen Rushin, died, one suffered serious physical injuries and the three others were physically injured.

Bell was driving 100 miles per hour in a 35 mile-per-hour area five seconds before the crash. At the time of impact, officials said Bell was driving 85 miles per hour.

He admitted to police that he was drinking before getting behind the wheel. A breathalyzer confirming his BAC was .170 -- double the legal limit.

“Cases like these leave family members hurting over the loss of their loved ones. Making sure instances like what happened in this case don’t continue is why we retooled our FAST team,” Gerina Whethers, Jefferson County commonwealth's attorney, said. “The Fatal Accident Support Team, our specialized group of prosecutors, makes sure we can keep those who would endanger the roadways off the streets.”

Minor was sentenced to 12 years for second-degree manslaughter, 15 years for first-degree assault, 5 years for each of the five counts of wanton endangerment, one year for each of the three counts of fourth-degree assault, 90 days for operating a motor vehicle without an operator's license, 10 days and a $200 fine for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of intoxicants, a $100 fine for reckless driving and a $100 fine for speeding. The sentences will run concurrently for a total sentence of 15 years.

Bell is not eligible for probation or shock probation and must serve 85% of his sentence before being parole eligible.
