Man tried to use fake cash at 4 businesses in Shelby County, police say

Shelbyville police said it's not uncommon for them to get calls of counterfeit money, but it is rare for four businesses in one day to report the illegal activity.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Four businesses were hit with counterfeit money Wednesday and it's not just any cash. Someone tried to use fake $100 bills and Shelbyville police is hot on the trail.

"I think in every community you will see it occur from time to time," said Sgt. Kelly Cable.

He says the male suspect, who has not been arrested, used the fake cash at the Goody’s, Dollar General and Save-A-Lot at the Village Plaza Shopping Center.

Cable says the suspect was successful in using the money at the Goody's but was denied at the Dollar General and Save-A-Lot.

"Right in the middle of the day and just trying to take advantage of nice weather, pretty day, people out shopping and trying to blend in and commit the crime," Sgt. Cable told WHAS11.

He says the same man, who matched the description at the other stores, also targeted the Dollar General store on Mt. Tabor Court about three miles away. Sgt. Cable is cautioning other cities that might be next.

"It's odd that someone would hit one shopping center, one store right after the other. But again, if he was moving quickly, he knew what he wanted to do. I think he was banking on officers not getting there in time," he said.
