MARION COUNTY, Kentucky — Marion County Detention Center is advising the public to be on the lookout for an escaped inmate.

The detention center staff noticed Derrick Simmons, 43, missing from janitorial duties on Wednesday, Oct. 25.

According to a news release, Simmons was conducting janitorial duties in a multi-purpose, secure recreation area of the detention center. While cleaning the tables and chairs, authorities said he stacked some plastic chairs and climbed the chairs to the fenced ceiling. He then pried open a chain-link fence near a heater exhaust pipe, gained access to the roof and escaped. This happened around 11:30 p.m.

The release said Simmons was last seen wearing blue Dickies pants, a white t-shirt over a light grey thermal shirt and black shoes with white stripes.

He has been booked at the Marion County Detention Center since Sept. 12., 2023 and was assigned to the Substance Abuse Program.

Detention center staff notified all law-enforcement agents and search efforts were performed; however, there was no luck. Simmons is still at large, and local authorities are currently conducting searches.

If anyone sees Simmons or knows of his whereabouts, police urge you to contact your local law enforcement.
