LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Editor's note: A previous version of this story had only one of the women dying. A spokesperson for the family confirmed that the second victim died a short time later from her injury.
More information has surfaced in a Shelby County double shooting that left a woman dead and another injured over the weekend.
According to the Shelby County Sherriff’s Office, they received a call of someone being shot near a church in the 200 block of Pleasureville Road around 8:40 p.m. Friday.
Deputies said they checked out the area but were unable to find anything.
It wasn’t until deputies went back again and spoke with 32-year-old Michael Hunt who said the victims were at a home on Pleasureville Road.
According to arrest records, when deputies entered the home, they found a deceased woman, later identified by family as Beth Simmons on the first floor with a gunshot wound to the head.
A further search of the home led to the discovery of another woman on the second floor who had also been shot in the head but was still alive. Family confirmed the victim as Emily Simmons, Beth's daughter. Emily was taken to the hospital for her injuries but died a short time later.
Neighbors said they heard the shooting, but they didn't think anything of it since the sound of gunshots are normal in a rural area.
"I heard the shots there was like six bangs that went off and I thought it was the kids with the fireworks, so I got up and went to the window and I seen one person in the yard but I thought it was kids," neighbor Rita Stout said.
Hunt was detained and taken into custody for questioning.
He told investigators he had a “job to take both females out” and had shot them in the head.
Police said Hunt had blood on his clothing.
He is currently housed at the Shelby County Detention Center and charged with two counts of murder.
"From the way that his friends were talking he was really bad on drugs and meth, said he had been talking like that for a couple of weeks," neighbor Areyanna Brown said.
Stout believes other family members lived in the home and were out of town when the shooting happened.
"I hate that he is going through that right now all of them especially the boy was out of town because in a sense he lost his mother and his father," said Stout.
The family wrote a statement, saying "We are grateful for the love and support that we have received from the community during this difficult time and ask for continued privacy. Once funeral arrangements have been made, a public service will be held to celebrate Beth and Emily. "
A GoFundMe has been set up for Beth and Emily. Click here for more information.
The investigation is ongoing.
