Officials: Fight on JCPS bus connected to double shooting in neighborhood

The violence broke out in the afternoon on Aug. 29, as Hudson Middle School students were being dropped off.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Two people are recovering from gunshot wounds after officials say a fight on a Jefferson County Public School bus spilled out into a Louisville neighborhood.

And now, Louisville Metro Police (LMPD) confirm it's one of the students' mothers charged with the shooting.

Shaquila Saddler, 30, is charged with two counts of assault.

The violence broke out in the afternoon on Aug. 29, as Hudson Middle School students were being dropped off.

Lifelong Louisvillian Stephanie Baker's arm is in a sling post-surgery, after both she and her son were shot at her parents' home.

"It was chaos, but to see kids of that age be so angry and so happy for the violence -- it startled me; it's something that I'm not used to seeing," she told WHAS11 on Friday.

Authorities said the disturbing scene played out on Rosewell Avenue. Witnesses described more than a dozen students involved in the altercation, which they said escalated quickly.

"The mindset was not to resolve the issue, it was to be aggressive -- it was to take it to another level," Baker said.

For Baker, the incident has brought some of Louisville's major issues to the forefront. She described her concern over persistent fights on JCPS buses and the fears from families of what they can lead to.

In a letter to families, the school's principal said that during the fight, students jumped out of the bus's back emergency door and ran to a nearby home.

"This type of behavior will not be tolerated by me, Hudson staff or the caring, committed bus drivers who transport our children safely to and from school each day," the letter read.

It was Baker's parents house. Both are in their seventies.

At their front door, they saw a boy hurt.

"He was just in tears, he was bloodied," Baker said. "So, they knew they needed to protect him."

Baker told WHAS11 it's the kind of danger her family had no intention of being caught up in.

"They [took] a stick and hit my mom with [it]," she said.

Baker and her son are expected to make a full recovery, but she worried about the direction of Louisville's youth and called for both JCPS and parents to take accountability.

"Mentally, it's going to hit me later I know that I almost died, or [that] my son could have died or my parents could have died; I don't like that," she said. "We reinforce bad behaviors."

Baker's family said they've sent video evidence of the fight found on social media to detectives.

As of Friday night, Saddler remains in jail on a $100,000 bond and is due back in court on Monday.
