GRAYSON COUNTY, Ky. — Authorities say a man has been arrested following the death of a one-year-old they believe stemmed from physical abuse.

James Garrigus, 25, of Leitchfield was charged with one count of murder Sunday.

Police say Garrigus was arrested Thursday after troopers noticed a vehicle he was driving traveling at a high rate of speed on the William Thomason Byway.

Troopers followed him to the Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center, discovering Garrigus was transporting his girlfriend’s one-year-old child to the hospital.

That child was later sent to Norton Children’s Hospital in Louisville.

Troopers say they notified detectives that the child’s injuries may have been the result of physical child abuse.

During KSP’s preliminary investigation, it was revealed the child suffered severe head trauma while they were in the care of Garrigus at a home in the 700 block of Clark School Road in Clarkson.

That child died Sunday and has not been identified.

Garrigus is currently booked at the Grayson County Detention Center and is being held without bond.

The investigation is ongoing.
