SALEM, Indiana — Indiana State Police is investigating a deadly shooting that happened in Salem early Sunday morning.
Just after midnight Jan. 28, the Salem Police Department, along with ISP, responded to a report of a person who had been shot inside a house in the 500 block of North College Avenue, near State Road 135 and East Hackberry Street.
When officers arrived, they found a man who had been shot. When medics arrived, he was pronounced dead. The victim has been identified by officials as 29-year-old Jacob Mitchell, from Salem.
A man and two other women were in the house at the time of the shooting, and were brought to the Washington County Justice Center for questioning. Investigators believe the shooting was a result of a domestic incident, and the other man in the house was arrested for murder.
On Jan. 29, the Washington County prosecutor dropped charges against the man, saying he was justified in the shooting.
According to witnesses, Mitchell had been attacking the people in the home during the night and he was charging at the homeowner when the homeowner fired shots. The prosecutor said the homeowner then called 911 immediately.
