LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A man was arrested and two police officers were injured after a shooting in the Smoketown neighborhood Tuesday evening.
At about 8 p.m., Louisville Metro police were dispatched to the 400 block of Roselane Street on report of a stolen vehicle with a broken window, according to an arrest citation.
When officers arrived on scene, they found Jeremiah Thompson, 19, standing next to a gray 2018 Kia Soul, the same vehicle that was reported stolen. He told officers he had been driving the vehicle.
Officers attempted to detain Thompson who began resisting arrest, according to his arrest citation. Officers took him to the ground but Thompson still refused to give officers his hands.
While officers attempted to grab him hands from underneath him, Thompson discharged a gun that struck himself in the torso, an officer in his hand and another officer in his leg.
LMPD Deputy Chief Emily McKinley said in a news conference Tuesday evening the officers were transported to UofL Hospital, and Thompson was taken to UofL Health -- Jewish Hospital.
Authorities say both the officers and Thompson are expected to survive. One of the officers had to have surgery to his hand after the shooting.
Mayor Craig Greenberg said both he and McKinley visited with the officers that were shot.
"Both officers are, fortunately, in good spirits, and on the road to recovery," he said. "I want to give a giant thanks to both officers and everyone on LMPD who goes above and beyond, every day, to work to keep all of us safe throughout the entire community."
Thompson was arrested Wednesday morning on two charges of assault against a police officer, wanton endangerment of a police officer, receiving stolen property valued at $10,000 or more, and resisting arrest.
Thompson is currently being held at Louisville Metro Department of Corrections
