CLARK COUNTY, Ind. (WHAS11) – New court documents released reveal another horrifying layer in the Joseph Oberhansley murder case.

Clark County prosecutor Jeremy Mull added another charge against suspected murderer Joseph Oberhansley.

"Today, I filed an additional count of rape against Joseph Oberhansley. I also modified the request for the death penalty in this case," Mull said.

Mull says the rape charge strengthens the case – a case that has been crushing to the victim's family.

Tammy Jo Blanton's mother speaks out about daughters murder

"I don't think they were surprised. The family has been very understanding of the process," Mull said. "They have been devastated by what's happened but they have been very brave and very courageous."

Tammy Jo Blanton was murdered in September. Police say she dated Oberhansley and he broke into her Jeffersonville home, sexually assaulted her and then stabbed her to death before dismembering her body and eating her organs.

Blanton's family previously told WHAS11 they want the death penalty for him.

Oberhansley has already served prison time for another murder and for shooting his own mother who survived.
