LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A father and son from Scottsburg, Indiana are in jail after police accused them of trying to traffic drugs at a worksite for incarcerated people on Sept. 20.

Authorities said Scott County Sheriff Jail Deputy Tim Applegate was with an incarcerated work crew with the Inmate Trustee Program when he noticed someone "circling the area." Applegate then watched the person enter and exit a restroom near the worksite before quickly leaving the area.

After calling for assistance at the worksite, investigators said Applegate and the other deputies found controlled substances in the bathroom.

Investigators identified the person as 61-year-old Charles Simpson, and found he had allegedly planned the "drug drop" with his son, 36-year-old Justin Simpson, who worked with Applegate.

A Scott County Sheriff's detective later arrested Charles. He's charged with conspiracy to traffic with an incarcerated person, conspiracy to deal marijuana, possession of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine, maintaining a common nuisance and possession of paraphernalia.

Authorities said they removed Justin from the Inmate Trustee Program and he's charged with conspiracy to traffic with an incarcerated person and conspiracy to deal marijuana.
