SALEM, Ind. — A 19-year-old southern Indiana man was arrested Tuesday and charged with rape and child molestation.
Darrin Mitchell, of Salem, faces one count of each. Both are Level 3 felonies.
A Washington County school resource officer contacted an Indiana State Police detective in December with information regarding possible abuse of a student at their school. ISP started an investigation, which included a forensic examination by a sexual assault specialist at a southern Indiana hospital.
Caseworkers from the Indiana Department of Child Services assisted in the investigation and helped coordinate a forensic interview with the child. ISP conducted additional phone and in-person interviews with "subjects related to the case," according to an ISP news release.
A warrant for Mitchell's arrest was issued on Tuesday and he was taken into custody without incident. He was transported to the Washington County Jail.
The age of the victim was not released.
