LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A man has been charged with two counts of assault after a violent stabbing in the St. Denis neighborhood Thursday morning.

Louisville Metro Police (LMPD) said Ernesto Ortiz Diaz, 53, was chasing a woman on Lynnview Drive for an unknown reason around 10 a.m.

The woman fell in someone’s yard and Diaz began “stabbing, thrashing and cutting” at her, according to his arrest citation.

The citation said a man on his porch directly across the street witnessed the stabbing and went inside his home, grabbed his "nunchakus" and ran back outside.

Police said the man began striking Diaz to get him to stop assaulting the woman.

After several strikes, the suspect turned around and “went after him,” causing the man to fall backwards. The citation said Diaz then jumped on top of him and stabbed him just above his heart.

Two other people witnessed the attack and stepped in to help. One person put Diaz in a chokehold while the other was able to get the knife away from him.

LMPD arrived on scene shortly after and arrested Diaz.

As of Friday, a police spokesperson said neither stabbing victim had died, however their exact condition was unknown.

Diaz’s bond has been set at $100,000 and he will be in court for arraignment on Aug. 31.
