LOUISVILLE (WHAS11) – A classroom window was hit by a bullet at Shawnee High School on Wednesday, Feb. 22.
The school was on heightened security after there were reports of shots fired in the neighborhood and the police presence was increased in the area.
Venita Benboe, the principal of the high school, said the window was found after she surveyed the school once the shooting incident was over
Benboe said a bullet fragment was found in a classroom as well. Students were in the classroom when the window was hit by the bullet, JCPS said
Benboe’s letter to parents said LMPD is investigating the incident.
The shooting happened outside of the high school and did not involve students, Benboe said.
No one was injured.
“I want to commend our teachers and staff for following all of the proper protocols to insure the safety of our students,” Benboe said, in her letter.
The following is Benboe’s letter to parents on this incident:
Dear Parents and Guardians,
This letter is to inform you of an incident that occurred today. I want to make sure you have accurate information and dispel any rumors you may have heard about the situation. Please be assured that the safety and well-being of your child is always foremost in everything we do.
This morning, our school went on heightened security because of police activity in the neighborhood. There were reports that shots were fired in the neighborhood outside of our building. Once the incident was over, I surveyed all of the classrooms and found one of our school windows had been hit and a bullet fragment was found in one of our classrooms. Police are investigating, and again, this is an incident that occurred outside of our building that did not involve our students.
I want to commend our teachers and staff for following all of the proper protocols to insure the safety of our students. No students were injured and all students are safe. We will have counselors on hand for students in the affected classroom.
As always, I want to ensure open lines of communication from the school, and if you have any questions about this incident, please do not hesitate to call us at (502) 485-8326.
Sincerely,
Venita Benboe
