Coroner identifies 79-year-old woman found stabbed to death in Fern Creek

Police officers found Bettie Collins stabbed to death during a welfare check last week.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville Metro Police Department has opened a murder investigation after officers found a woman stabbed to death during a welfare check last week.

On Monday, Feb 12, LMPD officers were checking on the welfare of someone who lived in the 10000 block of Chenoweth Vista Way when they discovered 79-year-old Bettie Collins dead, according to an LMPD news release.

LMPD's Homicide Unit conducted a death investigation and determined Collins had been stabbed. The investigation is now classified as a "murder investigation" by LMPD police.

The LMPD Homicide Unit is investigating and following leads, authorities say.

The police department issued a statement on Thursday saying:

"Although it is still an active investigation, LMPD wants to advise the public that, while we are aggressively pursuing the party(s) responsible for this heinous attack, there are some measures you can take to help safeguard yourself as well as your property. Confirm that you are securing your residences and vehicles to deter criminal activity. If you see anything out of the ordinary, or have any concerns at all, please report it immediately by calling 911 or contact our non-emergency number at 502-574-7111."

Police said they have "stepped-up" directed patrols in the immediate area.
