LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The above video aired on June 20, 2024.
Two parents were added to the federal lawsuit against Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS).
On Wednesday, Ashley Wright and Ingrid Payne joined Mary Bledsaw and Taryn Bell in the lawsuit against the school district.
In the nine-page federal lawsuit, the parents claim their kids' civil rights are being "eviscerated" by the school district in a move they said is discriminatory to thousands of Black students in Louisville.
It was filed in response to JCPS’ plan to cut transportation to the majority of magnet and traditional schools. Schools with 75% or more kids on free or reduced lunch won't be impacted by the transportation cuts.
The plan was recommended by Superintendent Marty Pollio, who said given their bus driver shortage, it's the only feasible way to reduce delays and get kids to and from school in a more timely fashion.
However, according to the parents, the cuts eliminate their chances of sending their kids to the best schools in JCPS.
All four parents also filed a temporary restraining order to prevent the district from implementing its transportation plan.
While the documents have been filed, they have not yet been heard by a judge. They are currently before Judge Rebecca Grady Jennings.
JCPS goes back to school on Aug. 8.
