Anchorage Public School may delay first day of classes due to mold concerns

In a letter to families, Superintendent Karen Solise said heavy rains and roof leaks led to the discovery of mold.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Anchorage Public School may have to delay the first day of classes after mold was discovered in the building.

Students were supposed to return on Aug. 7, however, recent mold concerns may delay the original start date.

In a letter to families Tuesday, Superintendent Karen Solise said heavy rains and roof leaks last week led to the discovery of mold.

"We have had professional testing since that time and are continuing to have testing performed in our building. At the same time, we are securing the best contractors for roof repairs, mold remediation and HVAC adjustments necessary, following all state and federal guidelines," Solice said in the letter.

While waiting on test results and for crews to clean up, administrators are limiting the people allowed inside the school.

Our of an abundance of caution, Solise says she's seeking approval from the Board and the Kentucky Department of Education to delay their start date.

"We want to be assured beyond any doubt that we have all of the information and all actions required to re-establish a safe environment for all staff and students," Solice said.

In an update Thursday morning, Solise told parents the Board will consider amending the calendar at a special meeting on Friday to propose pushing back the start date to Aug. 26.

"While this is not the news any of us wanted, we are glad we have uncovered all of these issues after the recent rains and before any of our beloved students or staff returned. Rest assured, there will be a final round of testing performed to give us the 'all clear' to begin our school year. Thank you for your patience and understanding," Solice said.
