LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A group of Central High School students were honored Monday morning for quickly stepping in to help an injured classmate.
When two students knocked heads while running in the Louisville high school's gym last week, a tooth from one of the students cut into the forehead of the other, lacerating an artery.
Five students, including three from the Health Sciences program, jumped into action and put their first aid training to use. The students applied pressure to the gash and used a first aid kit to tend to the wound. They also got some help from a nearby adult who called 911.
"Once we got him to sit and I made sure pressure was being applied, that's when I took it upon myself to leave and go find further help because that is when I knew that it was a situation that we would not have been able to fix independently," Ashton Tunstull, a senior in the pre-med program, said.
University of Louisville Health has a mentoring program with Central students -- hosting Stop the Bleed -- programs, which clearly paid off in this instance! Click here to learn more about how the program teaches first aid to the community.
