LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) is offering free summer meals again for families, but this year it's going to look a little different.
The district will have three bulk meal sites where parents or guardians can pick up a box with five breakfasts and lunches for their kids, according to a news release.
This is a new option in addition to the walk-in or walk-up program JCPS School and Community Nutrition Services (SCNS) has offered in the past. Every single student 18 years old and younger are eligible for both programs until July 26.
“Hunger doesn’t take a vacation, so making sure kids and teens have access to nutritious meals during the summer months is very important to keep them thriving while school is out,” Terina Edington, executive administrator of JCPS Nutrition Services, said. “Taking advantage of our summer meals program is also a great way for parents to save on their grocery bills.”
Officials said the meals will be available in-person from Monday-Friday at 41 mobile stops and 12 community partner locations.
If you can't bring your child in, you can pick up the 10 prepackaged meals for them at one of the three sites:
- Beckley Park at the Egg Lawn (1411 Beckley Creek Parkway)
- Evangel World Prayer Center (6900 Billtown Road)
- PRP Fire Training Center (8201 Greenwood Road)
The drive through sites will be open from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. every Tuesday starting June 4.
- Parents will be able to pick up one meal box per child. Each box contains five breakfasts and five lunches
- There is a limit of two boxes if children are not present with a parent
- Parents requesting food for more than two children will be required to have all children present
- Meal boxes will be distributed on a first come, first served basis
Officials said JCPS distributed nearly 230,000 meals last summer to children in its summer programs and at its walk-in and walk-up sites.
You can find a list of all this year's summer meal locations online here or by calling the JCPS SCNC Office at (502) 485-3186.
