LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky lawmakers have approved an oversight task force for Jefferson County Public Schools.
The House resolution creates a task force to review districts with more than 75,000 students. JCPS, the largest school district in the state, is the only one meeting that qualification.
The task force would look into the size of JCPS and would explore options of creating multiple school districts within it.
It would be compiled of lawmakers, a representative from the state auditor’s office, Mayor Craig Greenberg’s office and appointed members who live in Louisville.
Superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio spoke in front of lawmakers on Tuesday, both frustrated and upset over the decision.
“And so once again, all I am asking is that we focus on the facts. More than anything, treat us like you would treat your districts – every other district in the state right now,” he said. “If this is truly about student outcomes, then put in that bill that any district below a certain level of proficiency that is similar to JCPS [and they] will face the same investigation task force commission to find out about outcomes.”
The next step is a vote in front of the full House committee.
