JCPS parents see car line improvements at some schools; Others still have concerns

One of the concerns is some Jefferson County Public Schools that are close to Catholic schools and the traffic the pick-up lines will potentially cause.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The car rider line at Noe Middle School has picked up it's pace over the last three days; it cleared in just 20 minutes on Monday compared to the bumper-to-bumper traffic on the first day of school.

"It went by pretty smooth everybody got in and got out like they're supposed to," crossing guard Tino Porter said.

He said he hasn't seen any rushing or back-ups once drivers started paying attention to his signals.

"They did everything I asked them to do, stopped when they were supposed to stop, it makes me feel good," Porter said.

He said students are being dropped off by grade levels, and families are adjusting to the new routine.

"There was a lot of new students and the people that were dropping them off didn't know how to drop them off," Porter said.

Traffic may be getting better for most schools, but neighbors living around Audubon Elementary said they're still seeing back-ups.

"It's been chaotic," Rose Camacho said. She lives near the school on Hess Lane. "They line up all the way from Poplar Level to Pendale and then from Hess Lane to Pendale."

Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) said there is no crossing guard at Audubon Elementary.

Bill Wieneke understood Camacho's frustration.

"You're going to have about 45 minutes everyday where you're not going to be able to get through the neighborhood," Wieneke said.

He is even more concerned about traffic since more schools in the area will be starting soon.

"St. Stephen Martyr, they start this Wednesday, and from what I've been told they're going to get out the same time as Audubon Elementary," said Wieneke.

He hopes traffic will go down like it has at Noe Middle School.

JCPS said drop-off and pick-up times at Audubon Elementary have greatly improved even though the school doesn't have a crossing guard.
