LIST: JCPS implements new safety measures at high school football games

A JCPS spokesperson did say most high schools were implementing most if not all of these safety measures already.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — New safety measures are being implemented at Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) high school football games for the rest of the season.

In a letter sent to high school principals, JCPS told them the following safety measures will be taken across the district:

  • Everyone will be wanded before entering the game
  • A picture ID is required for all students and adults
  • No backpacks or large bags are allowed inside the sporting event: exceptions include small clear bags (no larger than 12 x 6 x 12) and small clutch purses (no larger than 6.5 x 4.5) but these could be searched
  • Once guests exit the game, re-entry is not permitted
  • All middle school students must be accompanied by an adult
  • All gates will close by the start of the third quarter

A JCPS spokesperson did say most high schools were implementing most if not all of these safety measures already. They added these items set a "baseline for uniformity among our schools" and individual schools can still add other safety measures if they want to.

Two high schools, Fern Creek High School and Valley High School, have added their own "no mask" policy for their games for the rest of the year.

It's unclear what kind of masks they have referred to.

The JCPS spokesperson added the shooting at PRP High School had nothing to do with the football game happening at the same time as it occurred hundreds of yards away from the field.
